Objectives

  • Describe the evolution of FDA pregnancy labeling, including the transition from the former pregnancy categories to the current Pregnancy and Lactation Labeling Rule (PLLR).
  • Identify factors that may contribute to fetal malformations, including medication exposure and maternal risk factors.
  • Recognize safe pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatment options for common self-care medical conditions that may occur during pregnancy and lactation.
  • Identify medications that are contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation and the associated risks to the fetus and neonates.
  • List immunization recommendations before and during pregnancy and their role in maternal and fetal health.
  • Identify reliable information resources to provide safe medication recommendations and counseling for patients planning pregnancy, pregnant and lactating individuals.
