Objectives

  • Define the concepts of SUD, OUD, dependence, addiction.
  • Describe the neurobiology of SUD and OUD.
  • Describe screening tools to identify patients at risk for SUD.
  • Identify the non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic management available for SUD, particularly alcohol and OUD.
  • Identify common barriers to the access to medications.
  • Discuss the pharmacist’s role for increasing access to treatment for OUD patients seeking care.

  • Pharmacist Technician  At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to: Define the concepts of SUD, OUD, dependence, addiction.
  • Identify screening tools to identify patients at risk for SUD.
  • Identify the non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic management available for SUD, particularly alcohol OUD.
  • Identify common barriers to access medications.
  • Identify strategies to reduce barriers to access medications in the community.
  • Recognize the role of pharmacy in the prevention and management of SUD particularly OUD and alcohol.
