Objectives

  • Describe the pathophysiologic mechanisms of pain including nociceptive, inflammatory, neuropathic, and functional pain, acute, chronic pain or acute exacerbation of chronic pain and their corresponding treatment goals.
  • Describe the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic characteristics of nonopioids medications.
  • Describe the role of non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic options in the management of acute and chronic pain.
  • List the indications, common adverse reactions and contraindications of pharmacologic treatment.
  • Discuss an analgesic regimen with appropriate patient monitoring.
  • Identify regimen adjustments that may be made to meet therapeutic goals in a patient with a complaint of pain.
  • Pharmacy Technician: Describe the pathophysiologic mechanisms of pain including nociceptive, inflammatory, neuropathic, and functional pain, acute, chronic pain or acute exacerbation of chronic pain and their corresponding treatment goals.
  • Describe the role of medications in the management of acute and chronic pain.
  • Dentify the adverse effects of non-opioids.
