Objectives

  • Describe the general principles and ABCDE approach of acute poisonings.
  • Explain the mechanism of acetaminophen (APAP) and salicylate toxicity.
  • Discuss the management of acute APAP and salicylate overdoses.
  • Describe the preparation, dilution and administration of specific antidotes and pharmacologic agents used in the treatment of acute APAP and salicylate intoxications.
  • List hospital antidote stocking recommendations as per current expert consensus guidelines.
  • Explain the importance of adequate interpretation of urine drug screen panels.
  • Describe the role of a dedicated clinical pharmacist in the Emergency Department.
  • Identify available certifications, academic programs and opportunities for pharmacists who want to develop in the areas of toxicology and emergency medicine.
